The Cellini Masterpiece Reviews

Interweaves military intelligence, history, terrorism, intrigue and romance

September-October 2006

Minnesota, the University of Minnesota Alumni magazine

A Minnesota farmer is called to Malta urgently by his brother, only to arrive on the Mediterranean island to discover that his brother has been kidnapped. So begins this mystery thriller that interweaves military intelligence, island history and current event, terrorism, intrigue surrounding priceless art, and, of course, romance.

This is a true story--And I'm Sticking to It.

TRIUMPHS & MISFORTUNES
MY TRIP TO MALTA 1-14 MARCH 2005

The weather in Malta was a bit like my trip, sunny at times and plain ugly at others.

It began with an hour plus equipment delay leaving Minneapolis, turning what should have been an easy connection at Gatwick into a breakneck race to catch our plane for Malta. Evie and I arrived thirty minutes before the Air Malta flight was to leave. The connecting flight agent called the flight gate to tell them we had arrived. When she looked up at us I knew we were in for some bad news. We were on the passenger list but they didn't have our tickets so we would need to produce them. We didn't have any. All we had was the confirmation letter we had received from the travel agency. Moreover, the agent at the gate didn't have the authority to make up a new ticket. "Would you please wait?" she asked. It was the ultimate rhetorical question.

At four o'clock on a Saturday morning, we staggered out of bed in our hotel room at Melleiha, Malta, and breakfasted on granola bars and--yes, I'm ashamed to admit it--a taste of Irish whiskey with our orange juice, before grabbing our bags and heading for the elevator to the lobby.

Actually it was elevators. Our daughter couldn't get into ours. She had managed to cram two suitcases full of clothes into one bulging bag, even though she knew we would only be gone for three days at the most. As seasoned travelers, Evie and I had a light overnight bag with shorts, tee shirts and changes of underwear. Katie, on the other hand, never went anywhere without a complete trousseau.

"I don't know what I'll be doing."

The last installment before the trip to Sicily

The good book says "Thou Shalt Not Steal." I have always prided myself on my honesty, but as Mark Twain once observed, "Much of what passes for morality is nothing more than lack of opportunity." Alas, an opportunity presented itself, and I couldn't resist. Little did I know how I would pay for my crime.
